A unique educational charity and membership organisation dedicated to helping people realise their potential. The ESU was founded by writer and journlist Sir Evelyn Wrench after the horrors of World War 1. Sir Evelyn felt that if the world was able to communicate more effectively, global understanding between nations would improve. English became a unifying language. His ideas are as relevant today as they were then. People who knew Sir Evelyn personally said that he had an energy and idealism that drove things forward. In the courtyard of Darmouth House, in honour of his work, is the engraving "What others have dreamed, he has done".
International friendship and understanding is at the heart of all we do at the ESU. Throughout our work there is a strong focus on young people - enabling them to utilise the skills of public speaking and debate to become confident communicators. As a membership organisation we offer the opportunity to be part of a global network, bringing people together to consider different ideas and to ponder the intricate richness of the English language.
The English-Speaking Union of the Commonwealth (ESU) is an independent, non-political body which exists to promote international understanding and friendship. It believes
that this cannot be left to governments alone but must also be done at a personal level. It also believes that this can be achieved most effectively through the medium of the English language.
As an educational charity the ESU works through people-to-people exchanges, scholarships, speaking competitions, and programmes dealing with cultural and current affairs.
Its work grows in importance as the world shrinks through developments in communication and technology. As interdependence becomes more apparent, the need for goodwill and understanding grows stronger. The English-Speaking Union, which was originally founded to foster good relations between Britain and the USA, later extended its orbit to the Commonwealth. It now operates on a worldwide scale. There are some 60.000 members around the world and the membership is still growing.
